Is urban sprawl good?

by Jason Carini on June 12, 2009

Most people have experienced the benefits of sprawl through new housing developments, new strip malls, Starbucks, etc.  But what about the downsides to urban sprawl?  Fewer people have felt the negative effects of it; but when it hits, it hits hard.

Here is a very interesting article about bulldozing portions of cities and towns where the population has shrunk to low levels.  It is a definite must read and will stretch your thinking on urban sprawl.

Jason, I can't tell whether you're in favor of government planning of cities or not.

Sprawl IS government planning… can't we be for a different (I argue more free) version on planning?

Bob,

Zoning laws in themselves have a direct sense of city planning. I guess the question isn't if we believe in city/government planning. Rather it should be to what level of involvement should local government have with the growth of the city. Or in the case of this article, what level should the city be involved in tearing down dilapidated buildings that harm the health of the city?
