This chart comes from a favorite blog of mine by Tom Vanderbuilt, How We Drive.
The phrase “Cars are the news cigarettes” was coined by Jonathan Maus at BikePortland.org
I love the analogy and though it is a stretch to assume that consumers will act in exactly the same way with both products, there will definitely be some correlation. I sense that soon it will be less “cool” to own a car, especially for the younger generation as my generation and younger are increasingly asking for a more mixed-use environment.
Are you like me in this regard? Have you started to wish more and more that you could do without the silly old thing? We have started to realize in our lives that while there are still very few choices as compared with the rest of the world, it is still possible to make choices that allow us to use the car much less. Are you making similar choices in your life? I would love to hear about them if you are.
